About Missy’s Writing
At eighteen, I decided to head to Bible college for a couple of years. I had some pressing questions about the faith I’d been taught, and I wanted some answers before studying something “really useful.”
I have yet to shift course, I guess. I graduated with my BA in Biblical Studies, minoring in New Testament Greek, from Multnomah University in 2006. While some of my questions were answered, many more arose, and my love for learning about Scripture and the God it reveals only grew. There are few things more energizing than the struggle to articulate a deep soul-question, the work in conversation with others to hold up those questions to bright light, the rich “wait a second!” moments that occur as truth roots itself deep into our bones. Some of my most joyful wrestling has been through reading and writing.
Most of this writing has been in-house work. I helped develop a small group Bible study for a large church in Los Gatos, California. I’ve adapted, written, and rewritten curriculum for preschoolers, middle schoolers, college freshman, and adults in a Degree Completion Program. I am just beginning to submit my writing to external sources. A highlight was writing two blogs for BibleProject as I began my seminary studies.
Earning a Master’s of Divinity from Western Seminary necessitated the kind of learning, reading, writing, praying, and wrestling that I love to do most. My hope is to use this further education to contribute to relevant theological discourse that feels readable and exciting for people who do not have formal theological education.
While writing work is slow to build, my primary focus is serving as a teacher at Black Forest Academy in Kandern, Germany. It is a joy (seriously!) to teach middle school Bible courses in an international setting. Middle schoolers are my people.
Speaking of my people, I am married to a great dude and we have two great kids.
